ENGINEERING CONSIDERATIONS

What your system must account for

Exhaust Temperature & Regeneration

Passive DPF systems (PLUS-300) rely on sustained exhaust temperatures to regenerate. Standby or variable-load generators that don’t reach or hold sufficient temperature are better suited to active regeneration (VOLT, NOVA), which uses an electric heating element independent of exhaust conditions. 

Controls Integration & Genset OEM Compatibility

BlueMAX systems monitor exhaust conditions and DEF dosing via onboard controls that typically need to interface with the generator’s existing control panel (CAN bus, MODBUS, or dry contacts) for alarms and derate signals. Confirm compatibility with your genset OEM’s control architecture, particularly on retrofit installations, before finalizing system selection. 

Backpressure & Footprint

Adding DPF or DOC stages increases system length and exhaust backpressure compared to SCR-only. Confirm the generator’s allowable backpressure rating before specifying PLUS, VOLT, or NOVA on existing installations. 

Fuel Sulfur Content

DPF- and DOC-equipped systems require ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD, ≤15 ppm) to avoid catalyst poisoning and ash accumulation. SCR-only systems are more tolerant, but ULSD is still recommended. 

Maintenance Intervals

SCR-only: DEF system checks, catalyst inspection per OEM schedule. Passive DPF: periodic ash cleaning, longer intervals. Active DPF: more frequent ash cleaning, plus heater element inspection. 

DEF Infrastructure

All SCR-based systems require DEF storage, delivery, and doing infrastructure. Plan for task sizing relative to runtime, freeze protection in cold climates (DEF freezes near -11°C/ 12°F), and dosing pump/injector maintenance intervals.
